Painting by Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712). The master's deep love of his country comes through in works that feature the great buildings of the great age. Always fair skies, always the presence of an industrious and contented citizenry.

Jan van Goyen paintings Geocoded
View of Dordrecht from the Dordtse Kil
Painting by Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). The heavy atmosphere in all his works give an immediacy that belies the 400 intervening years between their creation and our sense that we could be standing just in the spot he was, feeling the same breeze and hearing the same activity on the nearby boats.

van Bommel Paintings Geocoded
Ships berthing at the Tower of Hoorn
Painting by Elias Pieter van Bommel (1819-1890)
van Bommel painted Dutch city life principally. Architecture figured prominently in his work, but not in isolation: it usually served as a frame and reference point for the human activities that went on around it. His work is about evenly split between naming a specific scene and rendering it as he saw it, and idealizing an unnamed setting, or transplanting a certain structure into an alternate setting. One regular feature is slightly overcast skies: not too sunny, not too dramatic.

Issac Ouwater paintings Geocoded
Nieuwe Kerk
Painting by Isaak Ouwater (1748-1793). One of many expert city views, all painted to show the finest that the city had to offer in architecture, public spaces, favorable climate, and an elevated approach to life. The many views he painted in Amsterdam are just blocks from each other, and would make invaluable contributions to assembling a view of Amsterdam life as it was.

Paintings of Alkmaar in GeocodedArt
The Weight House, Alkmaar
The Weight House, Alkmaar, painting by Jacques Carabain (1834-1933)
A compact Dutch town, which exemplifies the impeccable North Holland lifestyle, has been a favorite subject of numerous painters over several centuries. The life was made meaningful in the living, not in theorizing about living.

Jan ten Compe paintings in GeocodedArt
View on the Excise tower in Alkmaar
painting by Jan ten Compe (1713-1761). His townscapes are not romanticized, but celebrate the pride and joy of quiet Dutch industriousness: tidy towns that provide a good way of life for eminently civilized people.

Aelbert Cuyp paintings geocoded
View of Dordrecht at Sunset
painting by Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691). An artist most known for works that feature handsome livestock, Cuyp often used recognizable town features as a backdrop, and on occasion did a proper cityscape. His favorite subject was the venerable city of Dordrecht, and he painted it in many moods, though none so lovingly as this example.
