Before Monet did his famous repeat studies of the doors of the Rouen cathedral in varieties of lighting, and before the studies of haystacks, he painted a dozen images of the town, river banks, and especially the Church at Vétheuil. Not many artists had a commitment to capture in art a view of a place on a day and in conditions that most residents of the place would rather forget.
